![]() Goldfeder highlighted the complexity of the issue and proposed another approach: “While I get really bothered when someone writes a single letter and then everyone at any city hall instantly loses their minds (think: the sky is falling!) and everything has to be totally changed, I certainly get the sentiment over the issue in supporting a member of the fire or police service. Nearly 80% reported that they believe their departments to be demographically representative of the community, while 10% reported that do not believe their departments to be demographically representative of the community. It should be noted that we also asked respondents whether they believe their fire department is demographically representative of the community it serves, as one of the biggest sticking points of this issue is the belief that some in public safety don’t understand the political or social undertones of the flags. This is just the tip of the iceberg for the discussion. It is not your vehicle it belongs to the public.” David had a different perspective, writing: “That flag pushes an illegitimate narrative and should not be on any official vehicle. Now, if you took an American flag and physically altered it, that would be a problem.” It is its own flag that takes design cues from the American flag. Bill wrote: “In no way does a thin line flag disrespect our American flag.Community commentsĪs you can imagine, this issue generated a lot of conversation on our Facebook page: The policy issue is a complex one, as the policy may prohibit display of political messages, yet many firefighters do not see the flags as political in nature. We certainly don't need any more unnecessary and predictable headlines.” Goldfeder was not surprised: “Once again, we learn about an issue that should be addressed by policy well ahead of the issue,” adding, “How does a chief know what policies to have? Can everything be ‘policied’? Of course not, but if you read about a national headline-making event impacting another fire department or chief, consider that a ‘tap on the shoulder’ to determine if your organization has (or needs) a policy addressing that specific issue. Most of the departments that do have policies are career departments. Our survey revealed that only 35% of respondents said their department has a policy that relates to the display of flags, decals and emblems, while 50% said they do NOT have a policy in place and 15% were unsure. They note that the flags violate policies that forbid displaying political messages on government property. In many of the news reports we’ve seen about this issue, departments and cities that have ordered the removal of the thin line flags have done so citing the policy piece. If you want to show support with a thin red line on a black or other color background to show support for our fallen and our solidarity, I could get behind that, but not the United States flag.”ĭeputy Chief Billy Goldfeder underscored the need to remember that these are not “our” fire trucks: “They were paid for by, and essentially belong to, everyone in the community, so if there is a chance that our good intentions of support could be perceived as a negative action or statement, (especially these days) why not avoid that?” Policies and procedures The symbolism of the original 13 colonies made by those 13 red and white stripes is a powerful connection to our nation’s founding. A staunch constitutional and code supporter, Bashoor found himself agreeing with the 68% of respondents, underscoring that, to him, the flag code is clear in that no other colors should adorn the flag: “If you’re going to allow any alteration, then you’d have to allow all of them.

![]() Most custom decks nowadays will come with some "gaff cards", so collectors will usually be accustomed to getting a modern deck of playing cards that comes with a double backer or blank card. Gaffed decks Just like there are decks for gamers, so too there are decks for magicians. These are also sold separately, but strictly speaking it is no longer a traditional deck given the unusual composition of cards. The classic card game Pinochle, on the other hand, requires a custom deck because it consists of two copies of the 9s through Aces in each suit, thus creating a 48 card deck. Wizard is another very successful trick-taking game, and is effectively just a standard deck with slight adjustments to incorporate custom Wizard and Jester cards. Decks of Euchre cards typically include enough cards for two games of Euchre, along with special cards that can be used for scoring during the game. ![]() The popular trick-taking game Euchre, on the other hand, doesn't employ anywhere near a complete deck. Canasta sets usually consist of two decks, and point-scoring cards have their values printed on them to make it easier to play the game. A classic example is Canasta, which was especially popularized in the 1950s. Often this simply involves adding point values to specific cards. Game decks Some standard decks have been slightly altered to optimize them for use in playing popular card games, even though many of these card games could be played just as easily with a traditional deck of playing cards. See a range of Bicycle rider back decks. So despite the success of custom playing cards, we can expect standard decks to continue to be popular for card games and card magic. Furthermore, the sleight of hand skills they have developed will often make tricks seem more impossible and miraculous if the deck of playing cards they are using looks ordinary in every respect. Most magicians also prefer to work with a standard deck, because they don't want their spectators being distracted by fancy artwork or hard-to-read pips and indices. A standard deck of playing cards, with clearly recognizable indices and suits, will usually serve that purpose best. While it's fine for a deck of standard playing cards to have a classy looking tuck box that exudes sophistication and style courtesy of embossing and foil accents, the cards themselves need to be functional and immediately recognizable, in order to play games with them. ![]() Typically the faces of the cards are exactly as you'd expect to see them in a normal Bicycle style deck, aside perhaps from minor variations, such as in the colours used for the court cards.Ĭard gamers tend to prefer relatively standard decks like this, primarily for practical reasons. While card backs vary, and the Ace of Spades and Jokers can also be customized, the rest of a standard deck typically looks the same. Over the years the court cards have become more or less standardized, and so has the shape and style of the pips and indices. Standard decks When collectors refer to a "standard deck", what they typically have in mind is a deck that has a very traditional look. The aim is to arouse your curiosity about these types, and perhaps whet your appetite to learn more about them, and explore some of the other kinds of non-standard or unique decks that you'll find in the wonderful world of playing cards. It's not an exhaustive list, but is intended to serve as an introduction to some of the different types of decks that are available. So what are some of the different types of decks that are available? In this article, we'll introduce you to some of the more common types that have been produced. The history of playing cards is a rich tapestry that includes a wide range of different styles of playing cards. Already in the 15th and 16th centuries, when playing cards were first spreading rapidly throughout Europe, they were anything but "standard". This variety is not a new phenomenon by any means. Many of these display wonderful creativity in terms of their graphic design, with heavily customized faces and pips, card backs, and stylish tuck boxes. The average person simply isn't aware of the many beautiful custom decks of playing cards that are on the market today, and how popular these are.īut as any collector will know, there is a wide range of fantastic and creative playing cards available today, and a vast array of different types of decks is being produced on a regular basis. People new to playing cards are typically familiar only with what they've seen and experienced firsthand, namely the classic Bicycle deck with standard court cards. Much of the strategy of combat involves shoving opponents around on a 3x3 grid of a battlefield to stack damage on them. There are more twists and turns in the plot that I won’t reveal here, but suffice it to say that this game makes for an interesting twist on the “Groundhog Day loop”, though it’s less about repeating a single day than it is about returning to key decisions to find the best path forward.
